Considering I’m crazy about limiting how much plastic my family and I use, I was SHOCKED that it took me so long to realize that so much of our clothing is made out of plastic.

Polyester, nylon, acrylic, and polyamide are all types of plastic. And, while not all plastic is bad, here are a few reasons why I now avoid purchasing (and wearing) clothes made of plastic and why I care about organic clothes and low-impact dyes:

  1. Microplastics shed from plastic fabrics every time we wash our clothes and even while we wear the clothing. The microplastics from clothing contribute to the mounting issue of microplastics in our environment. (Microplastics harm ocean life and aquatic life and potentially us).

  2. We can absorb the microplastics in fabric through our skin. Research is being done to figure out if there are any negative effects from having microplastics in our bodies. In the meantime, I’d rather limit my family’s exposure to microplastics!

  3. Cotton is the number one production consumer of pesticides. Just like we want to avoid ingesting pesticides by buying organic food, we want to avoid absorbing pesticides from the clothes we wear by buying clothes made with organic cotton. (Plus, pesticides harm our air and water quality, which damages the planet and our health).

  4. Conventional dyes contain heavy metals and other toxic substances. Low-impact dyes are safer for us and the environment.

I’ve been on the hunt for the best options when it comes to clothing for me and my family. And, while I’m still learning, here are my favorite brands for babies and kids:
